Celebrating Sapphires!

When asked what their birthstone is, September babies know it’s their time to shine! In this month, people celebrate with the sapphire gemstone. This stone is a monumental symbol in our planet's history, and will continue to shine just as bright as you! Whether you are born in this fabulous month, or you know someone who is, here’s some gift inspiration to celebrate the right way!

Sri Lanka is known for sapphire - and good reason. Some of the earliest sapphires in jewelry and adornments have been found here, dating back to as early as 235 B.C. These gems became a staple in the Middle Ages all around Europe; Buddhists, kings and queens, Greek worshippers, and those who believed in Hinduism in this century all used sapphire for its supposed spiritual properties. This iconic blue stone is said to have a strong ability to redirect any harmful energies from its wearer, but it was also used as a worshiping stone to speak to their respective gods. At this time, rings were considered the best way to keep these spiritual talismans close. They were cut to a cabochon, allowing for seamless blue tones that mimicked the color of the sky.

Now, we carry the tradition of sapphire rings on! Sapphires are most often paired with other stunning stones, such as diamonds. These two shimmering beauties are a full symphony of beauty in the pear-shaped double halo ring.

If something more traditionally vintage-inspired is your style, try different cuts of diamonds with a perfectly colored sapphire in the center. This one-of-a-kind ring was designed by our jeweler, Rene, so it’s sure to turn heads!

If for some reason you have too many diamonds in your jewelry box (even though we think there is no such thing), try something more out-of-the-box with a negative space pearl and sapphire ring! It features a deep blue Montana sapphire in yellow gold, and on the other side sits a beautiful cultured pearl that adds a dash of elegance to your finger.

Or, you can become a star with our starburst ring! This beauty has a bursting diamond halo that shines on the finger with a perfectly elongated emerald cut sapphire of the most royal blue. Truly an elegant addition to any jewelry box.

Do you love bold jewelry that makes a statement, but is still sleek enough to wear every day? Try out our stunning new “wavelength” ring, with sparkling diamonds in a wave pattern that accentuates a cascade of sapphires of the deepest blues.

Record
-breaking sapphires have been found around the world since we’ve been searching for them. The biggest sapphire ever found is called the “Star of Adam”, It weighs a total carat weight of 1404.49 unfaceted, which is about 10 ounces! It was aptly discovered in Sri Lanka, which is where it sits to this day. The name comes from their Muslim belief of Adams Mountain Peak after he left the Garden of Eden, its current price sits at $300 million!

Before this was found in 2015, a 733-carat black sapphire held the record. The “Black Star of Queensland” has a very rough history. An Australian boy uncovered this gem in 1938, thinking it was a fun rock, but was quickly dismissed. Before becoming a famous gemstone, it had served as a doorstop for years before a lapidarist took a closer look. It is now a black star sapphire, set into a sparkling pendant. Its value has risen exponentially throughout the years, and now holds a value of $100 million!

Even though we can’t wear these iconic gems, we have several pendants that we think are iconically beautiful. Be inspired by Princess Diana with this starburst halo pendant. A beautifully placed array of diamonds surrounds a round, deep royal blue sapphire that sits perfectly on the neck.

A classic with a twist option for a sapphire pendant is a pear-cut halo! It is the same idea as the Princess Diana pendant, just a little bit of a different look! The bezel setting around the pear gives the pendant a sleek, modern look, while the milgrain details around the halo diamonds lend this design some vintage flair.
