Peridot Lore and Locales

With vibrant glowing green hues and a sparkle that is unmatched, it’s easy to see why peridot is August's most beloved birthstone. It is one of the oldest gemstones mined and used  in jewelry, with ancient records documenting the mining of peridot as early as 1500 B.C. The main source of peridot in the ancient world was an island in the Egyptian Red Sea, and some historians believe that Cleopatra's famous emeralds were actually peridots. From antiquity to today, this sparkling stone is the perfect way to celebrate August birthdays and special occasions!

Peridot is a unique gemstone in that it is always found in a light green “olivine” shade. It only occurs in a range slightly from a lighter green to a more trule olive tone.  Peridot's formation is also different from that of almost all other gems. Most gems are formed in the Earth's crust. The two exceptions are peridot and diamond, which are formed much deeper in the Earth; in the mantle. Peridot forms in magma in the upper mantle, about 20 to 55 miles deep. It is brought to the surface by tectonic or volcanic activity. Because peridot has such a unique journey from within the Earth to the surface, it’s a perfect gift to represent someone’s strength and perseverance!

While peridot can be found all over the world, we love to source local Arizona Peridot for our custom designs at Sami Fine Jewelry. In Arizona, peridot is mined on the San Carlos Reservation just outside of Globe, AZ. While Pakistan and Myanmar have abundant deposits of peridot, in our opinion it just doesn’t compare to the gemstones that come from our own backyard! The San Carlos locale has some of the world’s most beautiful and consistently high-quality peridot gems. Since the early 1900’s, the Peridot Mesa, located just southwest of San Carlos, has been mined for this stunning gemstone. Using minimally invasive techniques, natives on this Apache reservation have exclusive mining rights, and carefully extract the peridot while keeping the land cared for and maintained.

Peridot, the bright green color of nature, is associated with harmony, good health, restful sleep, and peacefulness. Known to some as the stone of compassion, peridot has been said to calm anger, and direct energy into positive action towards goals. According to some legends, peridot even protects against nightmares, as it was thought to have light from the sun within it. Peridot is also sometimes called The Study Stone, thanks to some mystics saying that it has the ability to invite the mind to focus. If you find that when you sit down to do something a thousand threads keep distracting you, this could be the perfect companion to set your mind on getting the job done. This is a gemstone that gives you the focus and energy you need to persevere so matter how taxing a task.
