September’s Shimmering Stone: Sapphire

While many states in the country begin to experience cooler weather and a taste of autumn, Arizonans long for the fall season to slowly approach during the month of September. Luckily, the elegant birthstone of the month, sapphire, delivers a gentle reminder that cooler weather is on the way! Its beautiful blue hues and graceful sparkle are sure to suggest that a new season is upon us. Read on to learn more about this lovely gemstone, discover all of its history, and even take a peek at our gorgeous Montana Sapphire pieces here at Sami’s!

Sapphires are one of the world's most precious gemstones. While many believe that sapphires are only found in blue hues, the gem actually has an array of different colors. In fact, when sapphires are found in colors other than blue, they are referred to as “fancy” sapphires. Fancy sapphires can be any color from bright fuschia pinks, deep sea greens, lovely violets, and even sunny yellows! The value of a sapphire depends upon the intensity of the color… The deeper the hue, the more precious the stone. Our “Water’s Edge”  piece, part of our American Gem Collection, features two deep blue Montana Sapphire gemstones. Click here to take a closer look at their beautiful color.

Sapphires can be found all over the world, yet the finest gemstones have been found in the regions of Sri Lanka, an island country in South Asia. Sapphires are also commonly mined in specific lands in Australia, Tanzania, and Madagascar. Here at Sami’s, we specialize in Montana Sapphire, mined right here in the United States! Montana is the only location in the United States that produces stunning, gem-quality sapphires. These amazing Montana Sapphires were first found in 1865 when gold prospectors were mining near the Missouri river. Today, sapphires found in Montana are very rare and precious. The average size of a faceted sapphire is about 6 millimeters, weighing about one carat. These fit perfectly in any type of jewelry whether it be a glowing pendant, sparkly set of earrings, or gorgeous ring! However, it is clear to say that the largest sapphire that has ever been found is much larger than 6 millimeters. Just recently, on July 27th, 2021, a 2.5 million carat sapphire cluster was found in a Sri Lankan man’s backyard while some workers were digging in an attempt to build a well. Speaking of large gemstones...This beautiful Montana Sapphire pendant is 1 ⅔ carats and is sure to add some extra sparkle and shine to your everyday outfits! Click here to see more details.

While each color of sapphire has its own meaning, the gemstone itself, no matter the color, is well known for bringing plenty of wisdom, peace, and truth to one's soul. In the past, many people would wear sapphires as a symbol of health and to repel any sign of illness or disease. It was believed in the middle ages that sapphires could be used to steer clear of any negative thoughts and fill the mind with positive vibrations. Today, many keep sapphires in their homes as a sign of protection, joy, and healing. Our gorgeous sapphire celestial bracelet can be worn as a sweet reminder that good things are coming.
